It seems that the retirement news of Microsoft Project for Web has come before that of Project Online, which most customers are still waiting to hear about. It’s surely not the product retirement news you were hoping for.
Microsoft has announced the move of retiring Project for the web and incorporating this fully into Microsoft Planner / Planner for the web.
In Summary:
- Transition Announcement: Microsoft is transitioning to Planner to provide a unified work management experience. This transition integrates Project for the web, To Do, and Planner into a modern work stack.
- Retirement of Project for the web: In August 2025, Microsoft will retire Project for the web, as well as the Project and Roadmap apps in Microsoft Teams. Users will be redirected to Planner for the web and Planner in Teams.
- Unified Experience: Previously, Project for the web, Project in Teams, and Roadmap in Teams operated separately from Planner. The new integration aims to ease confusion by consolidating endpoints. Planner will now include both premium and basic plans, accessible with a Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 license.
- No Migration Required: All plans previously created in Project for the web will be accessible in both Planner for the web and Planner in Teams. No migration or change in licensing is required.
- Enhanced Features: With a premium license, Planner will offer familiar capabilities such as Goals, Sprints, Task History, Advanced Dependencies, Baselines, and more. It will also include next-generation AI-powered work management tools like Copilot and the Project Manager agent.
- Transition Process: Starting in early August 2025, users launching Project for the web or Roadmap for the web will be redirected to Planner for the web. Existing Project and Roadmap tabs in Teams will inform users to re-pin their tabs using the Planner tab for Teams.
- Benefits of Planner: The unified Planner aims to reduce collaboration issues, missed opportunities, and lower productivity by offering a single work management solution.
